Massachusetts taxpayers are officially on the hook for a transgender murderer’s sex-reassignment surgery.
US District Judge Mark Wolf today ruled in the case of Michelle Kosilek, who was born as a man but has received hormone treatments and lives as a woman in an all-male prison. Robert Kosilek was convicted of murder in the killing of his wife in 1990. Wolf is believed to be the first federal judge to order prison officials to provide the surgery for a transgender inmate.
Kosilek first sued the Massachusetts Department of Correction 12 years ago. Two years later, Wolf ruled that Kosilek was entitled to treatment for gender-identity disorder, but stopped short of ordering surgery. Kosilek sued again in 2005, arguing that the surgery is a medical necessity.
In his ruling, Wolf found that surgery is the “only adequate treatment” for Kosilek’s “serious medical need.” Prison officials have repeatedly cited security risks in the case, saying that allowing her to have the surgery would make her a target for sexual assaults by other inmates. Wolf said it is up to prison officials to decide how and where to house Kosilek after the surgery.
The first-ever transgender contestant in a Miss Universe pageant lost—but finished in the top 12 of 61 participants. Jenna Talackova failed to make the cut to the final five in the Canada contest, but was one of four contestants named Miss Congeniality, reports People.
Talackova was born a male but underwent a final sex change operation four years ago. She was initially barredfrom the contest, whose rules require that all participants be born female. An outpouring of support and media coverage finally convinced officials to allow her to compete. Despite the final results, she’s “still a winner as far as I’m concerned,” said Talackova’s attorney, Gloria Allred.

News Heard on the Show:
Miss Universe Canada officials have banned 23-year-old transsexual Jenna Talackova from participating in the pageant finals to be held in Toronto in May, 2012. The Vancouver contestant was one of sixty-five women chosen to compete in the national contest (which is owned by Donald Trump).
The Daily Mail Reports that Denis Davila, national director of Miss Universe Canada, asserts that every contestant must be a “naturally born female.” Critics of the decision claim that the rules do not specifically address sex change or plastic surgery.
Talackova is calling it a human rights issue. She says that she knew she was a girl by age four, started hormone therapy at fourteen, and had sex reassignment surgery at nineteen. She’s previously competed in both transsexual and women’s beauty pageants. “All I can say is that they disqualified me because I’m not ‘natural born,’ she told the National Post. “[That] doesn’t make sense because since I was conscious, I always felt this way.”
After being kicked out of the pageant, Talackova, whose twitter account has since been locked, tweeted, “I’m disqualified, however I’m not giving up. I’m not going to just let them disqualify me over discrimination.”
Online support is growing. So far, over twenty-one thousand people have signed a petition demanding she be allowed to compete. It reads, “She is a woman and deserves to be treated as any other woman would be.”
A California teenager is attempting to organize a boycott of Girl Scout cookies because the Scouts allowed a 7-year-old transgender member to join last year.
Why are the Girl Scouts “willing to break their own safety rules to accommodate transgender boys?” a girl who calls herself Taylor asks on a YouTube video. “I think it’s because the Girl Scouts care more about promoting the desires of a small handful of people than it does my safety,” adds the teen, who wears a scout sash in the film.
The video was posted to honestgirlscouts.com, a group that supports the Girl Scouts returning to “traditional values.”
A spokeswoman for the Girls Scouts defended the organization’s decision to allow transgender members. “For 100 years, Girl Scouts has prided itself on being an inclusive organization serving girls from all walks of life,” she told the New York Daily News. ”We handle cases involving transgender children on a case-by-case basis, with a focus on ensuring the welfare and best interests of the child in question and the other girls in the troop as our highest priority.”
Two high profile organizations, GLAAD and Human Rights Campaign, are speaking out against a new ABC comedy before the show even hits the air.
Work It, a sitcom set to premiere Jan. 3, revolves around two unemployed car salesmen played Ben Koldyke, Amaury Nolasco, who after their dealership shuts down, dress as women so they can get jobs as salespeople at a pharmaceutical company looking to hire female sales reps.
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the HRC both say the comedy reflects negative transgender stereotypes.
The HRC is urging supporters to send emails asking the network to not “air a show that reinforces negative and damaging stereotypes about transgender people.”
The show doesn’t claim to depict transgender people, and in fact the network has called it an updated version of Bosom Buddies, but the two groups don’t see the humor.
“Transphobia is still all too prevalent in our society and this show will only contribute to it,” GLAAD acting president Mike Thompson said in a statement on the organization’s website.
“It will reinforce the mistaken belief that transgender women are simply ‘men pretending to be women,’ and that their efforts to live their lives authentically as women are a form of lying or deception.”
Natalie Johnson noticed a teen she thought was male shopping for women’s clothing. When the customer headed to the women’s dressing rooms, Johnson stopped her. ”I had to just be straightforward and tell him, ‘You’re a man,’ and of course that really got him steamed,” she says.
The teen’s friends told Johnson that Macy’s lets transgender customers use the changing rooms for whichever gender they identify with, ABC News reports.
“I refuse to comply with this policy,” Johnson says. “There are no transgenders in the world. A guy can dress up as a woman all he wants. That’s still not going to make you a woman.” And “if you’re a man going into the women’s fitting room, I will kindly escort you to the men’s fitting room.”
Bobby Montoya, a 7-year-old boy from Denver, has no desire to join the Boy Scouts. Instead, he wants to be a Girl Scout.
His mother, Felisha Archuleta, spoke with 9News about the incident: ”I said, ‘Well, what’s the big deal?’ The troop leader said, ‘It doesn’t matter how he looks; he has boy parts, he can’t be in Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts don’t allow that.’”
Reporters with 9News contacted Girl Scouts of Colorado about Montoya’s application, which prompted the group to release a statement: “Our requests for support of transgender kids have grown, and Girl Scouts of Colorado is working to best support these children, their families and the volunteers who serve them. In this case, an associate delivering our program was not aware of our approach. She contacted her supervisor, who immediately began working with the family to get the child involved and supported in Girl Scouts. We are accelerating our support systems and training so that we’re better able to serve all girls, families and volunteers.”
Rachelle Trujillo, vice president of communications at Girl Scouts of Colorado, further clarified: ”Girl Scouts is an inclusive organization, and we accept all girls in kindergarten through 12th grade as members. If a child lives life as a girl and the family brings the child to us to participate in Girl Scouts, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her. Girl Scouts of Colorado respects the privacy of all girls and families we work with. When a family requests membership for their daughter, we do not require proof of gender, we respect the decisions of families.”
This bothers me. BOY Scouts is meant for BOYS and GIRL Scouts is meant for GIRLS. Maybe to resolve this issue, a 3rd Scouts group should be created: Transgender Scouts of America.
Look. A line needs to be drawn in the sand so this nonsense can stop. I don’t care if little Bobby sees himself as more of a girl than a boy. He has a PENIS. That penis makes him a boy, excluding him from Boy Scouts.
Why does this bother me? I could care less if a male with a penis identifies himself more as a female and feels HE has a right to urinate in a WOMAN’S restroom. When my daughters are also using a woman’s restroom….NOBODY WITH A PENIS SHOULD BE ALLOWED IN A ROOM (or group) MEANT FOR WOMEN.
